Welcome to Karl Marx in America

Welcome to Karl Marx in America. I am looking forward to meeting all of you Monday, November 4, for our first seminar, listed in our syllabus under the title “Gymnasium in a Box.” Over the course of the next seven months, students in the seminar will acquire a new set of tools, interpretive frameworks, to help us grasp a global economic transformation that has left no community, including Tuzla, untouched. In the process of leading the seminar, I know that I will learn a lot about Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Balkans, and Europe.

While I am counting on your ability to read and discuss the materials in English, I also do not presume that all of us enjoy the same training or skill-sets. In fact, I am counting on our bringing as wide a range of skill-sets to the seminar as possible. Otherwise, we will have nothing to learn from one another. So, get ready to read, to think, and to discuss the readings.

If you wish to stay on top of the seminars and my blogs, please select the subscribe button to the right. You can also subscribe to the blog using an RSS feed (just click the RSS feed icon at the top of the page). If you have any questions about the course, just email me at joseph.lough@newconsensus.org. If you have any questions about Tuzla’s Open University, you can email Professor Damir Arsenijevic at arsenijevicd@gmail.com.

You can find the readings for the November 4 seminar under the Documents tab. They are relatively short. All were written in the 5th and 4th centuries BCE. Two were written by Greeks, one by a Macedonian. You need enjoy no special training in Greek or Greek History to understand the writings. So please dig in and do keep an eye on this blog. See you on November 4, 1 pm, at American Corner.
